Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console Systems
Enjoy some of the video games from the 1980's through the 1990's with Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console. Play the games you grew up with, or if these are new to you enjoy the retro games from the past. Wii Virtual Console is made up of 5 different game consoles - Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis and the Turbografx-16. Below is a little history of each of the game consoles which games are available for download through Nintendo's Wii Virtual Console. Only the Wii Classic Gamepad will play with all the games.

NES - Nintendo Entertainment System
The NES was release in 1985, it contained a 8-bit CPU and 2 KB of RAM. The maximum graphical capacity that the NES was able to do was 256x224 pixels resolution with 16 colors out of a palette of 52 colors. The NES accessories included the NES Zapper which were a light gun and a Power Pad which was a floor mat game controller. Originally there were over 500 games available for the NES. Super Mario Bros. was the NES first major game success. The Nintendo Wii Shopping Channel offers some of the games, such has Mario Bros., Kirby's Adventure, Galaga, Excite Bike, Baseball, Wario's Woods just to name a few, for purchase starting at 500 Wii points ($5 USD).

SNES - Super Nintendo Entertainment System
Introducted in 1990, the SNES was the best selling game console of the 16-bit era and 128 KB Ram. SNES was capable of 256x224 resolution with 256 simultaneious colors. There were 3 different case designs for the SNES (Original US version, Original PAL version, Super Famicom Jr.), each system could only play the games specifically made for it and were mainly grey colored. During the SNES popularity, there were 750 games developed for the SNES. There are games currently available on Wii's Shopping Channel which include Donkey Kong Country, F-Zero, Super Mario World, Sim City and many more. Games start from 800 Wii points each ($8 USD).

N64 - Nintendo 64
Introducted in 1996, the Nintendo 64 was developed by Silicon Graphics. The Nintendo 64 was the last of the Nintendo game consoles to use a cartridge. It has a 64-bit CPU and 4.5 MB of Ram. The graphics resolutions can go up to 640x480 pixels and the buffer supports a 32-bit RGBA pixel color frame. It had a M-shape controller. The original Nintendo 64 console was a dark grey. Nintendo later release the game console in many different colors and themes. There are 396 games for the Nintendo 64. Nintendo has always held there exclusive games such has the Mario and Zelda franchises which run only on the Nintendo platform. The Nintendo Wii's Virtual Consoles offers Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, Star Fox 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for download on the Shopping Channel for 1000 Wii points each ($10 USD each).

Sega - Sega Genesis
Sega used to sell game systems such has the Sega Genesis but it stopped selling the systems and only creating games. The Sega Genesis had a 16-bit CPU and 72 KB of RAM. It also had 64 KB video RAM and could do 320x224 pixels resolution. The Nintendo Wii's shopping channel sells the Sega Genesis games for 800 Wii points ($8 USD) and up. Some of the Sega games for download are Ecco the Dolphin, Golden Axe, Sonic Spinball and Virtua Fighter 2.

TG16 - Turbografx-16
The Turbografx-16 was release in North America in 1989, but was released in Japan a year earlier under the name of NEC Turbografx. The Turbografx-16 had an 8-bit CPU and 16 Mhz. It also had a 16-bit graphical chip. This was the first system that had a CD-player attachment. The TG16 is best known has a "shoot'em fan's delight." Nintendo Wii Virtual Console provides several of the TG16 games for download by buying them with Wii points. Games starts at 600 Wii points ($6 USD). TG16 games currently for download include Bravoman, Bonk's Adventure, Double Dungeons, Military Madness, Shockman and many more.
